Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya formally know as (Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya) was founded on 1st November 1978. Earlier it was known as Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya. It is an ICAR accredited and ISO 9001:2000 certified institution. The College of Agriculture (founded in May 1966) formed the nucleus of new farm University. The University has Four Constituent Colleges which provides four UG and PG Degree programmes and the Dean, PG Studies provides 29 Masters Degree 16 Doctoral Degree programmes. It is a Non-affiliating University and is recognized by University Grant Commission (UGC) Under Section 12B of the UGC Act, 1978. It is spread over a total land area of 1488.10 acres. Location - The University is located at Palampur at an elevation of 1250 meters. The university is situated 2 km from Palampur on Pathankot-Mandi National Highway (NH- 20). Palampur is well connected from Delhi, Pathankot, Jammu, and Chandigarh by road. The nearest railway station is at Pathankot from where a taxi, train (narrow gauge) and bus service is available. It is near Pathankot railhead (further connected with a meter gauge train to Palampur) and is well connected from all important places of the country by road (NH20) and air (Kangra airport is around 50 Kms). A good number of buses are available to Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla etc.

The University has four constituent colleges namely College of Home Science, College of Agriculture, College of Veterinary and Animal Science, School of Basic Science and School of Agriculture.

The University has five advanced Research centers in the main campus of Palampur and 8 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Agricultural Science Centers) at Hamirpur, Kangra, Una, Mandi, Kukumseri, Dhaulakuan, Bajaura, and Berthin.
