The University was established in 1973 under the provisions of Uttar Pardesh State Universities act. The name of the university was rechristened to Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in 1989 and subsequently established as Central University under the provision of the Central Universities Ordinance in 2009. University is among the ten largest Universities of the country with 3 campuses and more than 180 affiliated colleges and institutes (both state run/aided and self financed) with its Headquarters at Srinagar. University is providing the both graduate and post graduate courses. Srinagar has strongly emerged as a centre of higher learning and research with the establishment of the University.
It offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research programs are offered by the university in different disciplines. The university has introduced some regionally relevant courses for the students. The university provides state of the art research facilities like Library, Computer Lab and Research laboratories etc.

UG programmes:
At UG level, the university offers courses like Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), BA/B.Sc, Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) for a duration period of three years except B.Pharma.
Candidates seeking admission in B.Pharma must have studied PCB / PCM with english in order to meet the eligibility criteria. To be eligible for rest of the UG courses candidates need to have secured a 10+2 level or equivalent degree in relevant discipline from a well recognized education institute.
Admission in B.Sc, BA/B.Sc and B.A is made on the basis of merit. Admission in B.Pharm is done on the basis of marks scored in the entrance test conducted by the college.
PG programmes:
At PG level, the college offers Master of science (M.Sc), Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) for a duration period of two years. Eligible candidates need to appear in the entrance test conducted by the university.
The selection of the candidates in the PG programmes is made through an entrance test to examine the skill and efficiency of the candidates. The university conducts the admission in PG courses in terms of marks obtained in the entrance exam by candidates.
