Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, or VNIT, NIT Nagpur is a publicly owned engineering institute located in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The institute was founded in 1960 as Regional College of Engineering for Nagpur. However, the board of governors renamed the college after Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering. The institute was granted NIT status under the NIT action in 2002 and is now called Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology. The institute offers ug courses and is home to around 3,000 students and offers around 50 trust-based and non-college scholarships. VNIT also mentors NIT Mizoram, which was set up in 2009, and initially, classes were held at VNIT before the Mizoram campus was built. The institute is not easy to get into, as admission is subject to the rank scored in the JEE-Mains.

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur is among those 30 National Institutes of Technology in India. The Government of India conferred on the Institute, the Deemed to be University position UG Grants Commission Act, the Central Government by the Parliament Act (NIT Act 2007 (No. 29 of 2007) acknowledged VNIT, Nagpur as an Institution of National significance together with all the other National Institute of Technology. This Act was brought into force on Aug 15th, 2007. Previously, this Institute was known as VRCE (Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering) and was found in 1960 under the proposal funded by Government of India & Maharashtra Government. The college started working from the month of June 1960 via merging the State Government Engineering College running since July 1956 at Nagpur.
