Mahatma Gandhi University, one of the four affiliating universities in Kerala, is the premier educational institution that strives to fulfill the higher educational needs of the people of Central Kerala. Set on the sprawling 110-acre campus called Priyadarshini Hills at Athirampuzha, 13 km off Kottayam, the University also has seven satellite campuses in parts of Kottayam and the neighboring districts. From its inception and through the last two decades Mahatma Gandhi University has taken immense strides in the fields of inter-disciplinary teaching and research in the areas of pure and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities. At present Mahatma Gandhi University offers research programmes in over forty disciplines through its own Schools as well as through its approved research centers. The University was established on 2 October 1983 and has jurisdiction over the revenue districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. It is a University that conducts a range of programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, M Phil and doctoral levels through its 16 University Departments, 7 Self-Financing Departments, 82 Aided affiliated colleges (of which 8 are Colleges with Potential for Excellence), 158 Unaided Affiliated Colleges and 73 Recognized Research Institutes. It imparts education in the conventional disciplines of science, social science, and the humanities as well as in the professional disciplines of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, engineering, technology, pedagogy and legal studies. The University has also made its educational presence felt outside its territorial jurisdiction through the Off-campus Centres of the School of Distance Education.
MG University Kottayam offers 300 academic programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level in multiple subjects under the faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Sciences & Technology and Applied Sciences, Physical Education, Management Sciences. Candidates must fulfill the required eligibility criteria in order to register for UGCAP and PGCAP and appear for the admission counseling process.
Candidates are shortlisted for University Undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes either on the basis of their merit in the qualifying degree or marks secured in the university entrance examination viz. MGU-CAT (in the case of selected PG courses). In the case of Ph.D. and M.Phil courses, the selection is done on the basis of candidate’s performance in written aptitude test (WAT) and interview.
Seats available in Govt./Aided/Self-financing affiliated colleges and Self Financing programs in Aided Colleges are mainly classified under Merit seats, Community seats and Management seat. Of the total merit seats available in affiliated colleges, seats will be reserved under the following criteria:
Applicants seeking admission to BA, B.Sc, B.Com and MA, M.Sc, M.Com courses need to submit a single application form and such students will be shortlisted through UGCAP (UG Centralised Allotment Process) and PGCAP (PG Centralised Allotment Process), respectively. The application fee for all candidates is Rs. 400/- (Rs. 200/- in the case of SC/ST candidates). In the case of MGU-CAT, separate exams are conducted for admission to different courses. However, a candidate needs to submit only one centralized application to register.
